    1. The Iroquois: Located in the Eastern Woodlands cultural region. Settled in New York State. Organized a Confederacy.

    3. "The Iroquois used their environment to meet their basic needs." The Iroquois have many legends about the "3 Sisters" who would never be apart from one another." Q: Who were the " 3 Sisters?"

    4. In traditional Iroquois culture, corn is one of the “three sisters” along with beans and squash. Corn exists today, not just as a plant, but also as a symbol.  It stands for Iroquois identities.  It stands for life.   And it stands for spirit.

    5. “The People of the Long House” Longhouse had openings at both ends that served as doors & were covered with animal skins during the winter to keep out the cold. 12 or more families lived in a long house. When man & women got married, they lived in the wife’s longhouse.

    9. Owned all the household property. Planted & harvested crops. Iroquois sachems (chiefs-leaders) were men, women nominated them for their leadership positions and made sure they fulfilled their responsibilities.

    10. Iroquois society was matrilineal, meaning descent was traced through the mother rather than through the father. Iroquois women enjoyed social equality and respect.

    11. Around 1570, 5 Iroquois nations formed an alliance to end the fighting: Until 1500 the 5 Nations were usually at war. Each nation had its own ruling system. The alliance became known as the League of the Iroquois.

    12. 50 specially chosen tribal leaders, called sachems, met once a year & made decisions for the League.

    15. "The Iroquois Indians used the pelts of animals for their clothing. In the winter, the men wore shirts, leggings, and moccasins made of buckskin. Buckskin is clothing made from the skins of animals, mainly deer.
