Living conditions • lived in longhouses, • large houses up to 100 feet in length usually made of elm bark. • As many as 20 families shared the longhouse • All families in the longhouse were related to the oldest woman, or matron, that “owned” the longhouse….matrilineal relationships • Not a lot of privacy from other families

Villages Why chose a new location for the village? Once the farmland around the village was becoming worn out, men from the village would begin scouting a new location. They would girdle the trees and clear the land the next year. • Criteria for the new village? • High, level land: good for protection • Steep hills on three sides would be best
