  3. THE GOD OF RELATIONSHIP (ISAIAH 1:1 – 2:5) Background Relationship that looks for right living 1:1 1:2 1:10 1:18 1:21 2:1 God’s appeal for relationship Relationship available to everyone Relationship before religion Relationship based on God’s cleansing

  4. BACKGROUND (1:1) • Broad historically context but no date • Setting is Jerusalem and nation of Judah, under threat from Assyria • 4 kings of Judah mentioned • Uzziah • Jotham • Ahaz • Hezekiah

GOD’S APPEAL FOR RELATIONSHIP (1:2 - 1:9) • Isaiah presents the state of the nation: • ‘Rebellious children’ (v3-4) • In a cycle of disobedience and consequence (v5) • Unhealthy from the top to the bottom, from the inside to the outside (v5-6) • Isaiah’s appeal is a cry from a Father’s heart • This is not how I made you to be • How long will you continue to run from me? • But there is hope… • God’s mercy on his children (v9)

RELATIONSHIP BEFORE RELIGION (1:10 – 1:17) • Religious ceremonies well observed • Multitude of sacrifices (v11) • Numerous festivals and gatherings (v13-14) • But high religion, low morality is rejected • They have become ‘a burden to God’ v14) • He doesn’t want anything to do with them (v15-16) • God’s call is for their hearts first and their actions second • ‘Learn to do good, seek justice, correct oppression, bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.’ (v17) • Actions flowing from God’s heart through a relationship with him

  7. RELATIONSHIP BASED ON GOD’S CLEANSING (1:16 – 1:20) • There is a way back • Nine commands (16-17) • A promise they can experience (v18) – you will be clean (as snow, as wool) • A blessing they can find… (v19) – ‘eat the good of the land’ • … or lose (v20) – ‘be eaten by the sword’

  8. RELATIONSHIP THAT LOOKS FOR RIGHT LIVING (1:21 – 1:31) • Continued theme from previous verses • Condemnation of a lifestyle that is not right before God • Relationship with God is not to be worked out through ritual but lifestyle

  9. RELATIONSHIP OPEN TO EVERYONE (2:1-4) • A message of hope to conclude! The mountain of the Lord will be the highest • The dwelling place of God (v2) • A ‘house’ not a ‘temple’ – a place primarily of dwelling not primarily of worship • Recognised by all (v2) • A transformed world (4) • Where God’s rule is complete • Peace replaces conflict, justice replaces injustice • A place for everyone! (v2-3) • ‘All nations shall stream to it’ (v2)
