Festival History Skanking- A traditional ska pit dance • In the early 2000s, Syracuse saw a rise in the interest in ska • Funk ‘n Waffles opens up as a small venue hosting ska shows • Couldn’t keep up with the demand • Skanksgiving was created to satisfy the large fan base in Upstate New York and held in November for the catchy name. • First festival held in 2008 and has been growing in popularity steadily every year since “There was something missing in Syracuse for ska fans. There is such a demand for it here and nothing to fill it. A ska fest was a perfect idea. Syracuse was the perfect location. What is it All About? • Skanksgiving Fest is a one day, all day ska festival in Syracuse, NY. • Held around Thanksgiving, giving the festival its name. • 12 bands dispersed amongst 2 stages • Held at the Syracuse OnCenter convention center. • Sponsorship would reach one specific audience condensed in one area. Expected attendance this year is 500 people. • Past sponsors: Red Bull Energy Drinks, Time Warner Cable, Syracuse Post Standard, The Sound Garden, K-Rock 106.5, Funk ‘n Waffles and The Guitar Center.
Demographics • 16-25 Years old • Syracuse University and other local college students, city residence as well as residence from the surrounding suburbs and cities • Surveys show that there are over 500 ska fans in Syracuse and the surrounding areas. • Syracuse is the center of ska for Upstate New York • Fans are consumers of over $10,000 of ska- related products and merchandise
