HEALTH – ICT CONVERGENCE • The OECD defines the Bioeconomy as consisting of three elements: • Biotechnological knowledge • Use of renewable biomass & efficient bioprocesses to achieve sustainable production • Integration between knowledge & applications • ICT & Nanotechnology are instrumental to the development of the Bioeconomy • Effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare will be at a premium in the future (US Healthcare spending will reach 22% of GDP in just a few years) • Healthcare is moving towards: • Personalisation • Prediction • Prevention/ pre-emption • Patient responsibility • ICT – HEALTHCARE CONVERGENCE IS A REALITY • 55% of people want to communicate via email with their doctors • 57% want to make doctors appointments via email • 57% want to purchase prescriptions via email Sources: OECD 2009 The Bioeconomy to 2030, Designing a Policy Agenda Burrill & Co 2009 Navigating the Sea Change, the State of the Industry in 2009
