Warm Up: • Using the criss cross method, write the formula for Mg and SO3.
Monatomic Ions • Single atom with a positive or negative charge Na Cl O Ca + Find the charge of these monatomic ions! - -2 +2
Polyatomic Ion • Tightly bound groups of atoms that behave as a unit and carry a charge SO3 CO3 NH4 OH NO2 Find the name and charge of these polyatomic ions!!
Cations: positive ions • Anions: are negative ions K+ PO4-3 Cr2O7-2 N-3 Label the following ions as monatomic or polyatomic and cations or anions!!!

5 Different Types of Naming • Type 1: Binary Ionic Compounds • Just 2 elements • Metal and nonmetal • Metal ion has 1 oxidation state Name the first element then the second with an –ide ending Example: NaCl Sodium Chloride
Try these on your own… MgCl2 CaO Na3N KF SrI2 Al2S3 Li3P
Type 2 • Binary Ionic • Just 2 elements • Metal and nonmetal • Metal has multiple oxidation states (transition metal)
Stock System • Name the metal followed by its charge in parenthesis using roman numerals • Name the nonmetal with an –ide ending • Exampe: Fe2O3 Iron (III) Oxide
Try these on your own… FeO CuCl HgI2 NiBr3 CoS MnO2
Type 3 • Polyatomic Compounds • More than 2 elements are present Name the polyatomic ions as written on Table E Example: (NH4)2CrO4 Ammonium Chromate
Try these on your own… NH4Cl MgOH NH4OH
Type 4 • Binary Molecular • Just 2 elements • BOTH are nonmetals Use prefixes Use –ide ending with the second nonmetal *Never use mono before the first nonmetal Example: CO Carbon Monoxide
Try These on our own… CO2 N2O5 NO2 P2O5
Type 5 • Acids • Begin with an H • 2 different types of acids • 1st type: H + halogen • 2nd type: H + polyatomic ion
1st type of acid (H + halogen) • Hydro__________-ic acid • Example: HCl • Hydrochloric acid • Example: HI • Hydroiodic acid *exception: H2S
2nd type of acid(H + PAI) • If the polyatomic ion ends in –ate, drop it and add –ic acid • If the polyatomic ion ends in –ite, drop it and add –ous acid Example: H2SO4 and H2SO3 Sulfuric acid and sulfurous acid
Try these on your own… • HF • HNO3 • HClO • HBr • H2CO3
