Why We Use PowerPoint • Very robust graphics capabilities • Complex 3-D effects, shadowing, fills, transparencies, etc • Vector-type graphics (smooth curves) easy to achieve with variety of tools. • Scale-able without loss of resolution/clarity • PowerPoint is a familiar platform. • Can import graphics from any source easily (internet, AWIPS, FXC, local libraries, etc). • Completed graphics can be easily re-used / modified.
Why We Use PowerPoint • Text box manipulation is easier and includes automatic spell checking. • Weather graphics generated via PPT can be easily incorporated into other presentations, Articulate Web Briefings, GoTo Meetings. • Allows for the full creativity of the graphics generation, including safety messages, climate graphs and reports, educational reports, case study graphics. • No need to transfer files into the AWIPS secure domain and into FX-C.

Optimizing PowerPoint For Weather Graphics • Have multiple background and format templates developed for your office. • Learn the various drawing tools, and use them to your advantage. • Archive with a strategy to re-use previous images. • Use shadows liberally to emphasize text/graphics. • Create a library of common symbols / fronts / etc.
