What is agriculture? • Agriculture is the science or art of cultivating the soil, producing crops, raising livestock, and preparing these products for human use.
Production • The making of food, feed, and fiber products for consumers and raw products for industry.
The Scope of Agricultural Production • In the 1930’s a farmer produced enough food to feed 10 people. • Today a farmer produces enough to feed 80 people • 1 hour of agricultural labor today produces sixteen times the food & fiber than it did in the early 1920’s.

Processing • Processing is the changing of raw products into processed forms for consumers.
The Scope of Agricultural Product Processing • The processing & storage of raw products from production agriculture prior to being marketed. • Jobs include: • Food, feed, & fiber microbiologists, nutritionists, & engineers
Agriculture Marketing • Marketing gets products from the producer to the consumer. Marketing is more than selling a product, it is advertising to enhance purchases by consumers. It also includes transporting the product to places were it can be sold.
The Scope of Agricultural Product Marketing • Includes all business activities required to move a product to a consumer • T.V., Radio, Printed Material, Telephone, Computers • Advertising- a marketing strategy that plays an important role in setting the price for those commodities that are in short supply or appeal to specific consumers • Transportation- Railroads, highways, airlines, & waterways
