Definition Tasks / Responsibilities • Ensuring that the business works • Making sure people want your products • Making sure business is running well – prices, profit, customer service • Process – multiple steps & keeps going • Quality • Pricing • Customer’s needs • Imports / exports • Marketing • Need for product

  8. Planning • Analyzing information and making decisions about what needs to be done

  9. Organizing • Determining how plans can be accomplished most effectively • Arranging resources to complete work • Includes staffing

  10. Implementing • Carrying out the plans • Helping employees to work effectively • More day-to-day management activities

  11. Controlling • Evaluating results to determine if the company’s objectives have been accomplished as planned

Leadership Styles Survey • All leadership styles are good – one is not more important or better than another. • It is important to understand leadership styles in order to be able to work with all personality types effectively. • In your group, come up with 4 attributes of your group’s leadership style and a famous person who might share the same style.

Power Attributes Strengths & Challenges • Pursuit of power • Seeking influence and personal prestige • Control, authority, ultimate goal is position • May measure success monetarily • Example: Donald Trump • Clearly sees goals • Respects authority • Doesn’t always consider others’ feelings • Doesn’t always take into consideration the consequences of certain decisions

Beauty Attributes Strengths & Challenges • Seek beauty, symmetry, and harmony • Style is more important than practicality • Self-sufficient, individualistic • Must have “good” taste, appearance; elegance • Example: Van Gogh • Truly appreciates beautiful things in life • Can take care of themselves • Doesn’t always seek the input of others • Reputations means too much

Social Attributes Strengths & Challenges • Love of fellow beings • Humanitarian concern for welfare of others • Will not act for material gain without first considering others • Unsympathetic nature of other types is frightening • Example: Mother Theresa • Truly cares for others and their welfare • Always thinks about others needs

Knowledge Attributes Strengths & Challenges • Value truth and knowledge above all thinking • Learning is important; knowledge is power • Value science, research, and theory • Detached and unemotional; frustrated at failure of others • Example: Albert Einstein • Great learners and thinkers • Can make a decision without becoming emotionally attached • Frustrated by others, especially if underachieving • Doesn’t think of others when making a decision

Resource Attributes Strengths & Challenges • Practicality, usefulness, efficiency and effectiveness • No use for knowledge that is not useable; make grades and get graded (not here to learn) • May look stingy / selfish • Life is a struggle and must preserve resources • Example: Bill Gates • Has a lot of common sense • Saves money • Can be considered stingy/selfish • Hard time seeing the purpose in knowledge or social

  30. Autocratic • Characterized by giving clear and precise directions as to what is to be done • Employees do not make decisions

  31. Democratic • Characterized by encouraging workers to share their ideas • Allows employees to make some decisions

  33. Situational • Characterized by selecting a style that fits the circumstances of the moment
