The South African Association of Campus Health Services (SAACHS) strives to provide comprehensive primary health care services to students and staff at tertiary institutions in Southern Africa. SAACHS works to foster collaboration, promote cost-effective practices, and facilitate research and academic contributions in the field of campus health care.

Who is SAACHS? Background – overview of history The South African Association of Campus Health Services were.. *Born between the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch in 1978. * A constitution drawn up, and Dr P. Slayen installed as the first chairperson of the fledgling Association of Student Health Services with Dr. J. van Heerden functioning as the vice-chairperson. * Dr J. van Heerden organized first symposium of the association on Monday 16 July 1979, the inaugural meeting to accept the constitution was held at University of Natal. * Present at that first meeting were representatives from the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Potchefstroom, Orange Free State, Pretoria and the Witwatersrand. Observer representatives attended from the Universities of Natal, Durban-Westville, and Zululand.
Who is SAACHScontinue * Organization grew and moved from Doctor driven to nurse driven * Currently mainly nurse driven with Doctors only overseeing three of the 22 institutions. UNISA not included * A total of +- 101 professional nurses providing care to +- 1mil Students at Higher education * A total of 168 712 patients are on average consulted with annually * health care that are provided includes areas of comprehensive primary health care, HIV/AIDS services and limited Occupational health and wellness services for staff
Who is SAACHS continue Mission statement: The South African Association of Campus Health Services , an association of health services supporting academic activities at Tertiary Institutions in Southern Africa, strives to: * Initiate , promote, encourage, organise and foster a liaison between members in the interest of campus health care * Effectively promote and facilitate comprehensive primary health care using a patient-centred, multi-disciplinary approach * make an academic contribution through research of an individual or collective nature * Encourage and promote cost effective practice management, and service excellence through on-going evaluation
SAACHS role in HE continue * Total number of clinics at the participating institutions are: 54 * Various scholarships are provided to the members for post graduate programmes * A bi-annual newsletter is produced and distributed to all members * Website to provide information & support * Consultancy support to new and established services
Current HEAIDS support to SAACHS * DOH collaborative support – Training to expand ARV provision within HEI- NIMART * HIV/AIDS HCT campaign support- FTF * M & E establishment * Information sharing – conferences/workshops * Assistance with relevant HIV/AIDS policy formulation- Workplace programmes * Expansion with EAP/staff wellness * Resource provision and sourcing funding
Why a Campus Health HOD Forum/ COP In line with the mission statement of SAACHS a HEAIDS Campus Health HOD forum/COP will: * Function within the framework of SAACHS and HEAIDS with the inclusion of the HEAIDS programme manager in the executive committee of this COP * Expand the working relation amongst SAACHS, HEAIDS, HESA, DOH and DOE to : - new, improved or expansion of established relevant MOU’s - expand relevant health care training
Why a Campus Health HOD Forum/ COP * Expand the services to staff and students at all HEI focussing on holistic Primary health care and HIV/AIDS care, treatment and support services * Facilitate collaboration, networking and sharing of knowledge both to HEI and FET colleges * Further Expansion and support from HEAIDS for the functioning of SAACHS as a collective Body and within each HEI
Terms of reference for the Campus Health HOD/FORUM Community of Practice 1. Background SAACHS established in 1978. HEAIDS established 2001 now a new collaborative Campus Health HOD forum/community of practice under the auspices of Higher Education South Africa to further expand the work of SAACHS and HEAIDS within but not only limited to all Higher education institutions. The future expansion to FET colleges will be strongly supported. To prevent duplication this COP will function very closely with SAACHS and its EXCO including HEAIDS and the programme head 2. Status 2.1 The Campus Health HOD forum/COP forms part of the HEAIDS programme under the auspices of Higher Education of South Africa (hereinafter referred to as HESA) and the South African Association of Campus Health Services (hereinafter referred to as SAACHS) 2.2 The campus health HOD forum/COP will determine its own functioning and will manage its owns affairs in close collaboration with SAACHS and HEAIDS
Terms of reference continue: 2.3 The Campus Health HOD forum/COP meets at least twice a year, once under auspices of HEAIDS in collaboration with SAACHS 2.4 The HEAIDS office assists the Campus Health HOD forum/COP with logistical and funding support pertaining to the meetings mentioned 2.5 The Campus Health HOD forum/COP together with HEAIDS programme director to liaise closely with the SAACHS executive committee and vice versa 2.6 The chair of this COP steering committee will send a report to HESA and HEAIDS annually 3. Membership As per SAACHS constitutions all HOD’s of HEI campus health services including the HEAIDS programme director as member 4. Terms of office As per SAACHS constitutions terms of office will be two years

Mission and objectives In accordance with the principles guiding a community of practice the Campus Health HOD forum/COP provides opportunities to: • collaborate, network, share knowledge • provide collective suggestions on issues relating primary health care and HIV/AIDS care, treatment and support services • relevant to students and staff in Higher Education institution.
Terms of reference continue: 6. Functions (include but are not limited to) The Campus Health HOD forum/COP will: • Support the mission and activities of SAACHS nationally and locally • Functions within its own management framework in close collaboration with SAACHS and HEAIDS • Expand the networking and collaborative support to various HEI campus health services • Focus on holistic primary health care and HIV/AIDS care, treatment and support activities and services • Utilize the current data as gathered for the basis of future research within the sector collectively, institutions individually and outside
Terms of reference continue: 7. Scope and Authority The Campus Health HOD forum/COP will function within similar governance structure as SAACHS and under the auspices of HEAIDS and HESA. This COP is not an autonomous decision making body but will focus on consultation and collaboration. The COP will strive to share best practices with respect to HIV and AIDS and general health related issues. 8. Meeting procedure Two meetings per annum will be conducted in close collaboration with the current SAACHS executive committee.
