  3. Rugged Land • 1,450 islands • Dinaric Alps • S. Greece- many faults • Faults caused land to rise and fall • Grabens—areas of land that have dropped down between faults and flooded • Aegean Sea is a graben • Gulf of Corinth: inlet that separates Greece from islands

  4. Agriculture • Mount Olympus: 9,570 feet • Travel difficult • Coast: flat area to grow wheat/grains • Olive and citrus groves • Help from EU

  5. Athens • Capital area- Sterea Hellas • Monuments on hill: Acropolis • 1/3 of population • Downtown: faster to walk than drive

  6. Focus on the Sea • Largest port- Piraeus • All places no more than 85 miles from sea • Relies on trade • One of the world’s largest commercial shipping fleets • Largest island: Crete • Fewer than 200 of all islands are inhabitable • Fishing and tourism

  7. Mystery of Crete • 3,500 years ago: Crete flourished • Minoans • Travel/Trade • Around 1500, people disappeared • Earthquake suspected • Digs showed remains of a tsunami—giant sea waves cause by a volcanic eruption

Boxing • Fought until knockout/admit defeat, can hit opponent when down • No weight classes, opponents chosen randomly • No gloves, but wrapped leather thongs around their hands and wrists which left their fingers free Pankration • Mix of boxing and wrestling, punches were allowed • No biting and gouging an opponent's eyes, nose, or mouth with nails • Legal to kick opponent in belly
