What is unnecessary material? -Unnecessary material is any part of a sentence, paragraph, or passage that does not connect to the main idea of the passage OR disrupts the flow of a sentence, paragraph, or passage, and therefore must be deleted.
Why is finding unnecessary material in a passage important? -The skill of finding unnecessary material is important in reading because it shows that the reader is focusing on the correct material and is able to find the main idea and supporting details. -This skill is tested on the ACT very often. Mastering this skill will increase your score on the ACT (and the PLAN).
Steps for Finding Unnecessary Information 1. Find the main idea 2. Locate supporting details 3. Locate any details that DO NOT support the main idea of the passage- this is unnecessary information and should be deleted. Even if these details have something to do with the topic of the passage, if itDO NOT support the main idea, it is unnecessary and should be deleted.
