Housing StressHouseholds on the lowest 40% of incomes paying more than 30% of that income on housing costs I have worked in the finance industry for the last fifteen years. Two years ago Iwas working for a small accounting business, and took time off to undergo treatment for cancer. During this time Iwas laid off because they said they could no pay my wage while I was off work. I could have taken industrial action, but fighting cancer was a big enough job. Since then I’ve been unemployed but have kept up my rental payments of $280 a week. I’m now 7 month pregnant, and I’ve got just $24 a week left over after the rent. Lynette, Tasmania, 7010
Housing Stress I'm a single mother of a 12 year old paying private rent of $310.00 on an old 2bdrm place in a suburb of Wollongong. I'm currently studying at university on a single parent pension, which at my full eligible rate is $600 a fortnight. This, combined with fortnightly Family Assistance payments and Rent Assistance, equals approx. $500 net a week to work with. My rent takes 63% of this, leaving me with $190 to cover absolutely every other life expense for myself and my child. Last year I took on a part time position because things were so financially untenable with what I had left to cover our costs to live on each week, my mental/emotional health was suffering. Working as well meant having to cut back my uni course load to accommodate the hours, creating a catch22 in delaying the graduation/qualification I desperately need to land a decent paying position. Jo-Anne, NSW, 2527

Housing options “I’m currently homeless sleeping on the floor of relatives houses, single mother of 2 children, currently on disability support pension” Michelle, NSW, 2749 “I’m a Single Mum w/4 teens, work full time, take home $700 p/wk pay $360 p/wk rent + $150 household bills + $150 p/wk food, not much left over .” Samantha, NSW, 2763 Rebuilding post-divorce. Paying high rent in schools district. I can service a mortgage but no deposit. What to do? Simone , Victoria, 3101 “We are renters and in our mid 50's , we will never be able to buy, as I work, we are not eligible for subsidised housing -what do we do?” Lyn , Victoria, 3073
