WOW (notes go under RAP) -Jews continued their religion during their exile (banishment) in Babylon - Faith gave them hope - Met in synagogues during Sabbath for worship and prayer EXILE AND RETURN Persian king Cyrus - 500 B.C. took over Babylon -538 B.C. permitted Jews to return to Judah and rebuild Jerusalem
WOW (notes go under RAP) -scribe became leader of Jews -supervised writing of the Torah on parchment paper making long scrolls - series of books collected together -includes 5 books of the Torah and 34 other books that describe Jewish history - Jews believed that God had a special role for them and that events had meaning Ezra Hebrew Bible
WOW (notes go under RAP) Genesis Daniel -first book of Torah (Bible), God punished world by flooding for bad behavior -created rainbow as promise to never flood world again -because of Tower of Babel, God made people speak different languages -describes God’s plan for a peaceful future -trusted advisor to king but refused to worship Babylonian gods -thrown into lion’s den but God protected him -story meant to remind Jews that God will rescue them. -Muslims share this belief with Christians

WOW (notes go under RAP) Jews and Greeks Alexander the Great Diaspora • Jews spread their beliefs to the Greek world and regained control of Judah. • -Judah came under his control • -allowed Jews to stay • -introduced Greek language and culture • -Greek word that means “scattered” • -refers to Jews living outside of Judah • -many spoke Greek but remained loyal to Judaism • -copied bible into Greek language • -helped spread Jewish ideas throughout • Mediterranean world
WOW (notes go under RAP) Maccabees Hanukkah Jewish way of life -Jewish army formed by group of followers of Judas Maccabeus (Jewish priest) -rebelled against Greek ruler, Antiochus, for forcing them to worship Greek gods -drove Greeks out of Judah -celebration about the cleansing of the temple -Religion shaped the Jewish way of life -rules affected their daily life, influenced education, foods they ate, clothes they wear.
WOW (notes go under RAP) Family Life Jewish Diet -sons carried on family name and took over head of house if father died -Jewish teachers became important community leaders -Mothers educated daughters about being good wives, mothers and housekeepers -Naomi became an example of a courageous Jewish women -Jewish dietary laws called “kosher” can only eat certain things -beef or lamb…NO PORK! -Can not eat milk products with meat in same meal
WOW (notes go under RAP) Jewish Clothing -forbade mixing fabrics such as flax with wool - men wore tunics made of linen next to their skin -wool or sheepskin cloaks during cold weather -caps or turban headwear and sandals -women wore long simple dresses and covered their heads with a shawl -women wore makeup and jewelry
WOW (notes go under RAP) Under Roman rule, the Jews were divided and rebellious. In response, the Romans destroyed the temple and exiled the Jews. Jews and the Romans King Herod -most famous ruler of Judaea -known for cruelty and changes in Jerusalem’s temple -ruled when Jesus was born
WOW (notes go under RAP) Pharisees Sadducees Essenes -taught in synagogues how to apply the Torah to daily life -taught how to apply Torah to priest in the temples -did not agree with Pharisees -priest broke away from temple in Jerusalem -spent lives in desert praying and waiting on God to deliver Jews from Romans
WOW (notes go under RAP) Dead Sea Scrolls Messiah -religious documents found in 1947 in the desert near the Dead Sea -historical and religious significance describing Judaism during Roman times. -a deliverer sent by God -A.D. 60 peak of Jews hatred of Roman rule
WOW (notes go under RAP) Zealots -Jews that wanted to fight the Romans for their freedom -A.D.66 revolted against Romans, drove them out -4 years later Romans retook Jerusalem killing thousands and destroying the temple -The Western Wall is all that remains of temple -Jews revolted again A.D. 132 -3 years later Romans put down revolt and forbade Jews from even visiting Jerusalem -renamed Jerusalem Palestine
