Militarism: There was an arms race (Countries competing to have the most advanced and powerful military.)
Imperialism: Countries wanted to appear to be the most powerful and have the biggest empires.
Nationalism: Ideas such as Social Darwinism and the belief and pride of one’s country being better than another.
1. The Spark • Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary visits Serbia on their day of independence. • A Serbian nationalist, a member of the group the Black Hand, assassinates Franz Ferdinand.
2. The Disagreement Hungarian • Austria-Hungary (and their ally Germany) demands an apology from Serbia and creates a list of ultimatums. • Serbia refuses (Russia supports Serbia in lack of apology & mobilizes). • Germany pledges full support to Austria-Hungary; a “blank check” German Austrian Turkish
2. The Disagreement (continued) Germany and Austria-Hungary demanded an apology, but Russia stepped in to say that Serbia did not have to apologize. Since most national leaders take vacation during August, armies and weapons were ordered to be ready just in case something happened. Every country had their army lined up and ready. There is such intense nationalism in each country that everybody believes they will win. This thinking leads countries to be stubborn—nobody will quit until they have won. Every country that went into war expected to be home for Christmas. After the first winter in the trenches, soldiers realized this was going to be a war like no other war in history.
