Effects of Glucose on the Growth Curve of Pseudomonas fluorescens Muhammad Khan & Andrew Passer November 28, 2011
Our Question: What effect does the addition of glucose have on the growth curve of Pseudomonas fluorescens?
Interest in Glucose Experiment 2 Experiment 3 ? ?
Is glucose metabolism in P. fluorescens acquired or inherited? We could not “shock” P. fluorescens into increased growth by raising it in a glucose-rich, tryptone-poor environment prior to inoculation.
What Concentration of Glucose Gives the Highest Level of Growth? Average: 3.418% glucose
Conclusion • Addition of glucose has a positive effect on the growth of P. fluorescens. • Glucose metabolism is an inherited trait for this species. • Optimum growth occurs at about 3.4% glucose.
Discussion & Future Directions • More time needed for P. fluorescens to grow. • Is the prolonged increase in OD actual growth? • What are the waste products of the different metabolic pathways (amino acid vs. sugar)? • How do the waste products affect the stationary phase?
