  2. INTRODUTION AIM:-Use of air to drive an Engine • Air is all around us, it never runs out, it is non-polluting and it is free. Air Driven Engine makes use of Compressed Air Technology for its operation. • If we compress normal air into a cylinder the air would hold some energy within it. When this compressed air expands, the energy is released to do work.

  3. So this energy in compressed air can also be utilized to displace a piston. • Air Driven Engine is basically a pneumatic actuator that creates useful work by expanding compressed air. • As there is no combustion taking place, there is no need for mixing fuel and air. • A pneumatic motor or air engine is converts compressed air to mechanical work.

  4. CONSTRUCTION • The engine is based on the application of supplying air with pressure to the cylinder which would make the piston reciprocating.

  5. In this photo, you can see holes in the back of the cylinder, which are for the air inlets. • The air inlets for the piston need to be towards the ends of the piston

  6. This photos shows all the pieces of the piston and valve assembly. The two holes in the front-most piece of plywood are the air inlet and exhaust. By changing which inlet one blows (or sucks) on, the engine will run in the opposite direction.

  11. Tank • Compressed air tank. • The tanks must be designed to safety standards appropriate for a pressure vessel. • The storage tank may be made of: -Steel, -Aluminum, -Other materials or combinations of the above.

  12. Working • The working of the engine is a very simple and process which is just based on the valve timing and the air supplied by the compressor. • The engine is a double action reciprocating engine. This engine is capable of developing small amount of torque. • The main work is of the valves and the compressor which are the sources of the generation of the motion in the engine

  13. Selection of Pneumatics • Pneumatic is an attractive medium for low cost mechanization • The main advantage of an all pneumatic system are usually economic and simplicity the latter reducing maintenance to a low level. It can also have outstanding advantages in terms of safety.

  14. Production of Compressed Air • Pneumatic systems operate on a supply of compressed air, which must be made available, in sufficient quantity and at a pressure to suit the capacity of the system. When pneumatic system is being adopted for the first time, however it wills indeed the necessary to deal with the question of compressed air supply.

  15. Reciprocating Compressors • Reciprocating compressors lap be had is sizes from the smallest capacities to deliver more than 500 m³/min. • Discharge pressure in the range of 250 bars can be obtained with high pressure reciprocating compressors .

  16. The compressor gives the source of energy that is compressed air. The compressor is a storage tank of air . Air is compressed and stored into a tank by reciprocating pistons. There is a pressure gauge fitted to the compressor . • The capacity of compressor is 10 kg/km². The compressed air is utilized in this unit to run the piston to get a torque for operation.

  17. Design of Pneumatic for Air engine • Design based on force known by motion engine details availability:- • Force to be exerted is 40N. • Force= PressureArea • Pressure in the cylinder = 0.4 x105 N/m2 • Area of the piston, (πd2)/4 = Force/pressure = 40/ 40000 = 0.001m2 • Force to be converted :- • On the reverse direction = PressureArea = 0.4 1051055= 42.2 N • For working pressure of 0.4105 N/m2,

  18. The following data is collected from our tests. 1. Maximum pressure that can be used - 7 to 8 kg/cm² 2. Maximum size of shaft that can be used - 20 mm width 3. Maximum rpm obtained at maximum pressure - 1000 to 2500 rpm.

  19. Control unit • The control unit controls the air pressure and volume entering the cylinder. The control unit consists of gate valve, pressure gauge . • It controls the pressure entering the cylinder and required amount of pressure can be given bye opening the valve, to generate maximum Rpm.

  20. Advantages • Compressed air technology reduces the cost of vehicle production. 2. There is no need to build a cooling system, fuel tank, Ignition Systems or silencers. 3. The mechanical design of the engine is simple . 4. Low manufacture and maintenance costs as well as easy maintenance.

  21. Applications • Three wheeler:- "Ku:Rin" named air-compressed three wheeler vehicle is created by TOYOTA in 2011. • Motorcycles:- A compressed-air powered motorcycle, called the Green Speed Air Powered Motorcycle was made by Edwin Yi Yuan, based on the Suzuki GP100 and using the Angelo Di Pietro compressed air engine.

  22. Mopeds:-As part of the TV-show Planet Mechanics, JemStansfield and Dick Strawbridge have converted a regular scooter to a compressed air moped. • Cars • Buses • Locomotives • Watercraft and aircraft • Trmas

  23. Conclusion • The main aim for the design of an air engine is to reduce the use of non-conventional sources of energy such as petrol, diesel and various other which are near to vanish from the world. • We need the vehicle which can also run on such sources as we have to find the substitutes of the vehicle running in today’s world. • The generation of power for generating various other powers sources also is necessary like it can be used for the generating electricity to meet the basic need by connecting it to a generator and could be made run whole of the time as it doesn’t uses any fuel whose availability is less and an non-conventional source and also if pollution free so there is no harm to the environment as well.
