The Office of Campus Safety • Director (Tom Lynch) • Manager Public Safety & Security ; Emergency Management (Scott Bronson) • Manager Student Rights & Responsibilities (Natalie O’Rourke) • G4S Security Administrator; 4 Supervisors; Security Guards on campus 24/7 OCS: Room 1210 - Simcoe Building

  3. Setting the Ground Rules • Provide students with the rules in your classroom, at the beginning of the course. • Give clear boundaries and maintain consistent expectations for student behaviour. • Direct them to consult the Student Handbook: Student Rights & Responsibilities (DC Policy & Procedure). *Also on Website. • Deliver a consequence for conduct which does not meet the standard for optimal learning. • Document incidents or issues; Academic Alert; notify the Dean or Associate Dean early when behaviour is a concern. (e-mails/journal entries/notes for reference with dates)

  4. Non – academic misconduct • refers to those activities and behaviours not directly related to the learning process. • Inclusive, but not limiting this definition are: violations of federal, provincial or municipal laws; • threats of harm or actual harm to a person’s physical or mental well-being; • disruption of or interference with college objectives, activities, facilities or operations; • damage to the real or personal property of the college or its members; use of college property or facilities without authorization and; violations of college policies or procedures.

  5. Communicate with your team • Documentation is a strong element of identifying a pattern of behaviour. • Sharing your concerns with the Associate Dean, Dean, or Student Adviser in your area may prompt early intervention. • Resources on & off Campus are invaluable: Health Centre, Counselling Services, S.A., Women’s Centre, Aspiria (S.A.P), Diversity Office, CSD, SALS, Mediation Services, 211.ca, and countless others.

  6. Behaviour Escalation • Report a conduct issue to the Main Security Desk: Gordon Willey Building, or • by calling 2400 to request a Security Guard to attend your classroom. • An Incident Report will be generated, and electronically forwarded to the Office of Campus Safety. • Once the Incident Report is reviewed, it is assigned a priority for investigation. • A complainant who files an Incident Report will be a witness, and will be part of the fact-finding process.

  7. Success Matters • Teachable moments happen outside the class room as well as within. • Students can be provided an opportunity to correct the behaviour; realize the impact on the complainant; receive a consequence in accordance with the provisions of Policy and Procedures, within the context of a safe and respectful campus community. • Penalties can range from verbal caution and counsel, to Behaviour Contract, to Trespass Notice (Trespass to Property Act) and expulsion.

  8. On Campus Emergency Dial 2400 : Not 911 • It is imperative that calls for immediate assistance be made to Campus Security, main desk. • Dial xt. 2400 from the classroom phone • Pre-program 905-721-3211 in your cell phone • Calling 911 will not provide the most direct response to your call for help. • C.E.R.T. / Security can reach your location before a general 911 call . If 911 is required, Security will give specific instructions for attendance on campus.

  9. DC Policies/Procedures • Upon enrolment, students have both rights and responsibilities. • These rights and responsibilities apply to all students, both on and off campus. • The fact-finding process is meant to be objective and fulsome, to the extent that policies and procedures are applied fairly and appropriately. • RESPECT campaign, Bill 168 Workplace Violence, Student Rights& Responsibilities… on DC Website.

  10. P.A. System on campus • Please note that our campus PA system is used exclusively to signal an emergency. (fire, lockdown, evacuation, flood, etc.) • Upon hearing a message broadcast on the PA, faculty are to follow directions within the message in a relaxed and calm manner. • Do not disregard a PA announcement!
