Defining Health and Wellness • Sound body and mind and free from physical disease or pain
NFPA 1583 • NFPA 1583 establishes the minimum requirements for the development, implementation, and management of a health-related fitness program for members of any fire department or emergency services agency.
Why do we have a problem with fitness and nutrition? • A recent NVFC study found “Rates of overweight and obese individuals in the fire service are higher than those found in the general public, ranging from 73% to 88% of firefighters. • Lack of awareness • Dietary issues: Portion Control, Excessive Carbohydrates and sugar in our diets
Why do we have a problem (Continued) • Inconsistent work and sleep schedules • Culture that supports poor eating and lack of exercise • Time: Trying to balance the demands of work, family, fire dept, etc.
Why is proper health and fitness important? • Your ability to do the job: • Higher rates of injuries. Some career ending • 50% of LODD are attributed to medical issues: Frequently MI, CVA • Inability to perform the requirements of job • Higher incidents of absence from work • Inability to save yourself or a fellow firefighter • Inability to affect the rescue of a citizen • Others?
