Adjudication Criteria EFFECTIVE SPEECH CONSTRUCTION • Continuity of thought through unity, coherence, and clarity. Is the organization of the speech evident? • Can I follow the speaker’s train of thought? • Is it easy to follow or do I have to work at it, making inferences and leaps of logic.
Adjudication Criteria EFFECTIVE SPEECH CONSTRUCTION • Does the speech convince or inform through evidence (quotations, authorities, etc.) and/or reasoning? • Did the speaker use external evidence that was convincing or at least compelling? • Did the speaker lay out a convincing, logical argument even with or without external evidence?
Adjudication Criteria EFFECTIVE CONCLUSION • Does the conclusion reinforce the major idea(s) of the speech?
Adjudication Criteria DELIVERY • Physical poise and gesture • Does the speaker project confidence through posture, facial expressions, and gestures? • Did the speaker display any nervous energy by pacing, shifting weight, or excessive gestures? • Did the speaker display nervousness through overly stiff posture and gestures?
Adjudication Criteria DELIVERY • Vocal force, fluency, enunciation, and projection • Could I hear the speaker? • Did the speaker enunciate? • Did the speaker include reasonable pauses for effect or was the flow of speech constant and uninterrupted?
Adjudication Criteria DELIVERY • Eye contact with audience • Did the speaker make eye contact with members of the audience? • Did the speaker connect with the entire audience at some time during the speech? • Was the eye contact fleeting or sustained?
Adjudication Criteria DELIVERY • Effective use of language • Did the speaker overuse any phrases? • Did the speaker use any particularly effective metaphors or turns of phrase?
Adjudication Criteria TIME INFRACTION • Time of less than 2:50 minutes or more than 5:10 minutes shall result in a deduction of 1 rank in the round.
