  2. I. Pharaoh was the chief priest and carried out certain rituals • 1st break in irrigation dike • Drove a bull around the capital to make the soil rich • 1st to cut ripe grain

  3. II. Egyptians were polytheistic  believed in many gods • Hapi – River god • Re / Ra – Sun god • Osiris – God of the harvest and the afterlife • Isis – Wife of Osiris. Together, the two ruled over the dead. • Annubis – Would weigh the hearts of the dead against a feather. If their heart was lighter than a feather, they would get to the afterlife. If it was heavier, they would be devoured by Ammit (female demon that was part lion, part hippopotamus, part crocodile). Osiris

  4. III. Mummification  to preserve dead bodies • Originally for the pharaoh but eventually for all Egyptians. The soul could only go on to the afterlife if the body was preserved. • Placed in a wooden box and covered with Natron • Caused the body to shrink and dry out (took about 40 days) • The stomach, liver, lungs and intestines were removed and put in canopic jars. • The brain was removed through the nose with a hook!   5. C. After the body was dried, it was wrapped in linen (mummy) D. Poor people were buried in caves or in the ground. E. Rich were buried in a special case or coffin inside a tomb. F. Tombs for pharaohs were in pyramids.
