State of the kerala church • The original Malankara church was divided and split because of various influences from abroad and within the community • What would St. Thomas think of all of these splits and problems? • St. Thomas wants us all to be in harmony with Christ Jesus and with eachother. • There was bitterness and resentment in the community of all that happened since 1653.
Mar Ivanios • Mar Ivanios felt that communion with the Catholic Church, which Malankara had from the beginning was needed to restore peace. • The church was going through litigation and splits. • Appeal to Rome • Mar Ivanios submitted the first memorandum to the Rome in 1926. • With two conditions • 1) To safeguard the ancient liturgy (rite) and practises • 2) Give jurisdiction to the Bishops over all the Syrian Jacobites who joined in the reunification.
Reunification Granted • July 1930 • Rome assured that the • Antiochean Liturgy would be preserved • Bishops would be received into the Catholic Church with their official status
Malankara Catholic Hierarchy • Mar Ivaniosvisited Pope Pius XI in 1932 and submitted the plan for growth and development • Archdiocese of Trivandrum and Tiruvulla were established. • Mar Ivanios was appointed Metropolitan
Malankara Catholics • The members of the Puthenkoor community who reunited with the Catholic Church are the Malankara Catholics. • The original Malankara Church of Kerala was founded St. Thomas the apostle, and was in communion with the Catholic church and the Pope in Rome till 1653 • The reunion is still under way.
