  1. Fertilization http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXNaTRs83hE • Fertilization is the union of an egg cell and a sperm cell.

  2. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube. • The egg is capable of being fertilized for only about 18-24 hours after ovulation.

  3. Only one sperm will be able to enter the egg. • Once inside the egg the sperm’s nucleus will join with the egg’s nucleus. • The result of fertilization is the production of a new person, complete with a unique set of 46 chromosomes; 23 from the sperm and 23 from the egg.

  4. The newly fertilized egg will now begin the processes of DNA replication and mitosis.
