Collaborative R&D Grants (CRD) • Main vehicle for Canadian firms to work with university researchers • At any point in the R&D spectrum • Support well-defined, focused projects with specific short- to medium-term objectives, or • Discrete phases in longer-range research programs (not contract research) • Must have a training component

Collaborative R&D Grants (CRD) • 1 to 5 years duration, usually 2 to 3 years • $10,000 a year to $1,000,000 a year, on average grant $55,000 per year • Industry responsible for at least 1/2 costs & must have the capacity to exploit results • Flexible leverage: cash plus in-kind • 80-85% success rate • No fixed deadlines • Review process depends on amount requested

Industrial Research Chair • Prestigious appointment of a distinguished researcher • Industry provides 50% of cost in cash • Funds for salary and research component • Initial appointment is for 5 years (renewable) • Currently over 120 active faculty positions • A significant university research program is established or enhanced in area of interest to industry • Must have a training component

  15. Senior Industrial Research Chair – for distinguished senior researcher. Associate Industrial Research Chair – for early-stage researcher demonstrating exceptional promise. Executive Research Chair – for outstanding R&D professional. Industrial Research Chair

  16. All Research Agreements are reviewed by NSERC staff to ensure guidelines are followed If not yet finalized, award will be conditional on Research Agreement meeting the NSERC IP guidelines Intellectual Property (IP) Ownership

  17. Any IP resulting from research will be owned by the university or the inventor, according to university policy (possibility of joint IP ownership). Partners may expect advance knowledge of the research results and / or licensing opportunities. University researchers must be free to use the research results for academic purposes, and students must be able to publish their thesis. Intellectual Property (IP)
