Functional Polymer Surfaces Kenneth J. Wynne, Virginia Commonwealth University, DMR 0207560 • A “C1” fluorous approach to a hydrophobic / oleophobic surface. • High molecular weight (Mn = 21 kDa) poly(3,3-bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxymethyl) oxetane) has been prepared: Tg, -40°C; Tm, 75°C. • On slow-cooling from melt, coatings are translucent and are conventionally hydrophobic and oleophobic • Crystallization (5-6 weeks, 25°C) results in lamellae asperities and increased Rq; adv increases by ~34° • Broader impact: Hydrophobic / oleophobic surfaces while avoiding perfluorooctoate (PFOA) which bioaccumulates • An image similar to that shown will be featured on the cover of Langmuir, 18 December 2007 • Work of Dr. Ying Zhen (Ph. D. Mich. State)
