How to paragraph 1. What is a how-to paragraph? • Paragraph that gives instructions -explains how to do or how to make something ex, how to have a successful garage sale • Use the command verb form to give instructions - ex, collect, clean, decide, mark, etc.
How to paragraph 2. How to write a “how to” paragraph? • Begin with a topic sentence • Divide the instructions into a series of steps. • Explain each step one by one 4) Use time-order transition signals to introduce each new step.
How to paragraph 3) Topic and concluding sentences • Topic sentence 1) topic – names the topic 2)controlling idea – what they will learn about it ex, How to have a successful garage sale controlling idea topic • Concluding sentence mentions the topic again to remind what the para was about.
How to paragraph 4)Transition signals • Time-order signals - If the steps need to be in a specific order • Listing order signals - the order doesn’t matter
*Transition signals - Appear in the beginning of sentences **Time expressions - can use almost everywhere in a sentence
How to paragraph 5) How to clean up after a party
How to paragraph How to clean up after a party:- • First, You must open the doors and windows and let ventilation take place • Next, you should pick up all the trash – cans, cups, pizza boxes , etc • Arrange the furniture – chairs, sofa, table ,etc • Finally, vacuum clean the whole place. In this way, a party is cleaned up
