The 8 Marker Scottish Text Final Question
Scottish Text – Final Question • Worth 8 marks at National 5 • Marks are likely to be picked up in 4 pairs of 2. • Answers can be extended bullet points or formal continuous prose • You can pick up a maximum of 4 marks by dealing with the extract (portion of text) printed in the exam paper. • The other 4 marks must come by way of reference to other parts of the text that are not printed in the exam paper.
How is it broken down? • Identification of commonality between this extract and at least one other part of the text= 2 marks • 2 marks can be picked up from selecting an appropriate reference from the extract in the exam paper and commenting on its effectiveness in relation to the question set: Quote + Comment = 2 marks • 4 marks are then available for selecting appropriate references from elsewhere in the text and commenting on their effectiveness in relation to the question. You would be expected to give at least two examples: Quote + Comment = 2 marks (x2 examples =4 marks)
How to gain each of the 2 marks • Relevant reference to technique/idea/feature/character/aspect of another part of the text that deals with the question = 1mark Appropriate explanation of how this example explores or develops the issue in the question= 1 mark • You repeat this process at least twice for all 4 marks • When dealing with prose texts, SQA will accept a detailed reference in place of a specific quotation, however quotations are always preferred. • You may find it helpful to give more than 2 examples, just in case any of your answers are not detailed enough/not acceptable.
