E N D
The group first formed in Sacramento, California in 1988 as high school friends Chino Moreno(Lead Vocals, guitar) Stephen Carpenter(Lead Guitar) and Abe Cunningham(Drums) started jamming out. They later found Chi Cheng(Bass) and Frank Delgado(Keyboards, Turntables) to complete the band and record a demo. The Beginnings
The name Deftones was created by Carpenter, he wanted a name that would stand out so he chose the prefix “Def” cause it was a popular slang term at the time with artists like LL Cool J & Public Enemy. Then he added the sufix “Tones” which was popular in the 1950’s with bands like The Quin-Tones and TheMonotones. • The name is vague and it reflects the musical complexity this band has to not really be categorized into one genre. • Started out in Los Angeles, clubs opening up for bands like Korn until they got signed by Maverick Records. DEF-Tones
On November 4, 2008, Cheng was seriously injured in a car accident in Santa Clara, California. The accident caused brain trauma and left him in a unconscious state every since slowly making progress. • The band and a lot of friends made a benefit concert on November 19 and 20 of 2009 all proceedings going to the One Love for Chi benefit so he can get checked out by the best hospitals in the world to find a cure. • Bands like Korn, P.O.D., System of a Down, Cypress Hill, Linkin Park, Incubus, and many others played at the concert. • They have been playing with new bassist Sergio Vega hoping that Chi will recover. • www.oneloveforchi.com One Love for Chi
