Definition of ABLM Diplomate • ABLM Diplomate is a licensed physician/attorney who holds a certificate from the American Board of Legal Medicine, attesting to satisfactory evidence of special training and competence, demonstrated by successfully completing a Board Certification examination in Legal Medicine.
ABLM Diplomate is a “Hybrid” • ABLM Diplomate is “NOT” merely a Physician or an Attorney. He/She is a Physician-Attorney. • ABLM has the very highest competency standard in the U.S. • ABLM requires a second Doctorate degree (JD) to qualify
ABLM Diplomate is a “Hybrid” • ABLM standard surpasses ALL other nationally recognized certifying organizations: • ABMS • AOA Specialty Boards • ABPS
ABLM Board Certified Specialist • Virtually all Dual-Degreed MD’s & DO’s acquire Residency training in a medical specialty or subspecialty • The ABLM regards the additional 2-3 years of education in an Accredited University School of Law as the “Equivalent of Fellowship” in a medical specialty.
ABLM Board Certified Specialist • May an ABLM Diplomate claim that he/she is a “Board Certified” Legal Medicine Specialist? • By Statute or Regulation, most States, including Oklahoma, do not allow physicians to publicly claim to be “Board Certified”, unless the Specialty is recognized, or equivalent, to an ABMS.
ABLM: Holds Highest Standard • Because the ABLM requires physicians to have a second doctoral degree (JD), its standard is not only equivalent to, but in fact EXCEEDS the ABMS Standard. • No State Medical Licensing Board has prohibited the “HYBRID” ABLM Physician-Attorney Diplomates from claiming they are “Board Certified” Legal Medicine Specialists.
2009: Ruling by the OSBMLS • The ABLM is NOT recognized as an ABMS Specialty, which requires only an MD degree, and NOT Dual Degrees. • In 2009, in a historic U.S. case of first impression by a State licensing Board, Sanbar, as required by Rule, petitioned the OSBMLS to permit him to publicly use the words, “Board Certified” by the ABLM.
UNIQUE Ruling by OSBMLS • Upon Review & Consideration of the Sanbar Case in Executive session, the OSBMLS ruled that: • “Physician-Attorneys” DO NOT fall under the Rule, which applies to MD “Physicians.” • The Board has NO Jurisdiction over “Physician-Attorneys” (HYBRID); • Therefore, Sanbar may claim that he is “Board Certified” by the ABLM.
