Computer BasicsThe OS (Win XP, Vista, Win 7) • This is the operating system on your computer. Your computer cannot run without this software • It is also required in order to run any application software such as MS Office • The OS will also determines which types of applications you will be able to use on your computer based on compatibility
Computer BasicsApplications (MS Office 07-2010) • The Application Software contains the most frequently used applications today; such as: • Word (word processor) • Excel (spread sheet) • Power Point (presentation) • Access (database)

Basic Terminology • Files = something you created using one of the software applications • File Format = the extension at the end of the file name defines how it was created • Folders = a place to store a file on your local drive • Download = a file retrieved from a website

Identifying File Types • We briefly touched on this in a previous slide • All files that you create or those that may already be on your computer have an extension that identifies the type of file created • The most common types of files are: MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access
Identifying File Types • Most files have a three letter extension which can help identify the type of file • .doc is a Word file (.docxfor Office 2007/2010) • .xls(Office 97/2003) or .xlsx(Office 2007/2010) is an Excel file • .mdbis an Access file • .pptor .pptx(Office 2007/2010) is a PowerPoint file

Identifying File Types • What is a PDF file ? • PDF stands for Portable Document Format • It is a replica of a file that is viewable by those who otherwise do not have the ability to open the file • This does not require any application to open; only a viewer (Adobe Acrobat Reader) which is downloadable at no cost
Identifying File Types • You just created a letter and saved the file as “letter to mom”. The file has an extension of .doc • What type of file is “letter to mom.doc”? MS Word document
Email / Web Before you can begin using email you must have a provider so that you can access the internet (Web) An internet provider is someone like Verizon, Quest or AT&T The same goes for accessing the web
