What is ISO? • International Organization for Standardization • Founded in Geneva, Switzerland – 1946 • ISO Standards facilitate the exchange of goods and services worldwide. • They serve to safeguard consumers, and users in general, of products and services. • When things go well – for example, when systems, machinery and devices work well and safely – then often it is because they conform to standards. ISO is responsible for many thousands of the standards which benefit society worldwide. • www.iso.org
What is ISO con’t • ISO standards are voluntary, but may be a market requirement at times. • Quality system registration involves assessment and audit by a third party.
Why Become ISO Certified? • Market forces may drive a company to become certified. • A desire to improve processes. • Customers may require certification. • A desire to conduct business internationally.

ISO 9000 Standards The standard has eight clauses. The first three are for information and the last five are requirements the organization must meet. • Scope • Normative Reference • Terms and Definitions • Quality Management System (QMS) • Management Responsibility • Resource Management • Product Realization • Measurement, Analysis and Improvement
