Notes Plant Cells, Animals Cells, & Microbes
CELLS • CELLS VARY IN SHAPE AND FUNCTION DEPENDING ON THE TASKS PERFORMED BY THE CELL. EXAMPLE OF DIFFERENT CELLS • EUKARYOTES- CELLS THAT HAVE A NUCLEUS; INCLUDES MOST ORGANISMS BESIDES BACTERIA • PROKARYOTES- ONE-CELLED ORGANISMS THAT DO NOT HAVE A NUCLEUS OR OTHER ORGANELLES/ INCLUDES BACTERIA
CELL ORGANELLES • CELL ORGANELLES AND THEIR FUNCTION: • NUCLEUS- CONTAINS CELL’S DNA AND CONTROLS ALL CELL ACTIVITY (LIKE GROWTH AND REPRODUCTION) • MITOCHONDRIA- FOOD MOLECULES ARE CONVERTED INTO ENERGY • ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM- TRANSPORTS MATERIAL THROUGHOUT THE CELL • CELL MEMBRANE-THIN LAYER THAT REGULATES WHAT MATERIALS COME IN AND OUT OF THE CELL.
VACUOLE- STORES FOOD AND WASTE FOR CELL • CYTOPLASM- GELATIN-LIKE MATERIAL THAT MAKES UP INSIDE OF CELL; MOST ORGANELLES LAY IN THE CYTOPLASM • LYSOSOME-CONTAINS ENZYMES THAT DIGEST FOOD MOLECULES (REMOVES WASTE)
THE FOLLOWING 2 ORGANELLES ARE IN PLANT BUT NOT ANIMAL CELLS: • CELL WALL-OUTTER MOST LAYER (IN PLANTS, BACTERIA, AND FUNGI) THAT KEEPS CELLS SHAPE AND PROTECTS IT • CHLOROPLAST- CONTAINS CHLOROPHYLL AND MAKES FOOD FOR CELL THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS
PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS**Remember plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts while animal cells do not**
WHAT IS A MICROBE? • A MICROBE IS A MICROSCOPIC ORGANISM USUALLY ONLY MADE UP OF 1 CELL, SUCH AS BACTERIA OR PROTISTS BACTERIA PROTIST
WHAT IS A VIRUS? • A DISEASE CAUSING AGENT THAT CAN REPRODUCE ONLY INSIDE THE CELLS OF PLANTS, ANIMALS, AND BACTERIA. IT CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT A HOST.
