First, Review English Rules • Noun= person, place, thing • Many nouns are neutre • Masculine and feminine are only used for human beings or animals • Man/woman ; lion/lioness; host/hostess • Book, pencil, paper, waste basket (neutre) • An –s is used to describe plural words • School= schools; car= cars; book= books

  3. Now, Italian Rules • Noun= person, place, thing • Endings change depending on: • the gender = masculine or feminine • Number= singular or plural • So, the ending of an Italian noun reveals its gender and number. • Book= books; pencil= pencils • Libro= libri; matita= matite

Nouns that end in –e in the Singular Form • Singular nouns ending in –e can be masculine or feminine. • Student= studente ; restaurant= ristorante • Don’t confuse them with plural nouns that end in –e. • Those are feminine plural nouns!!! • Pencils= matite ; pens= penne • When in doubt, always look to the dictionary to make sure the noun is singular and not feminine plural!!!
