Town of Scotland : 1860 • Settled around 1700 by Isaac Magoon as part of the South East part of Windham. • Scotland Society organized around 1732 • Incorporated as a town: 1857 • Population in 1860: • Ranked 720 (152 of approx. 159 towns) • Smallest: Andover, CT – 517 • In 1860 a town of farms, Webb’s shoe manufactory, Coit’s General Store, saw mills, a grist mill, and a fulling mill.

5. War Begins • April 12, 1861 – Shots fired at Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Sumter surrenders 34 hours later. • The Civil War Begins. • President Lincoln calls for 75,000 men to put down the rebellion. The first of many, many calls for men. • 15 Scotland residents respond by enlisting in the Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.

6. Scotland’s Volunteers : 1861 • William H. Dorance was the first to enlist on July 1, 1861. • Battle of Bull Run - July 21, 1861 : Confederate Victory • On July 22 Gould Anthony enlisted in the 5th CVI, Company D [3 – Years]. • 7 Scotland residents served together with the 10th CVI, Company F in 1861 [3 – Years].

7. Scotland’s Volunteers : 1862 - 1863 • 8 Scotland residents joined the 18th CVI [3 – Years] between 1861 and 1862. • The 18th CVI was captured with the rest of the Union army during the 2nd Battle of Winchester, VA – June 13 – 15, 1863 • President Lincoln issues a call on August 4, 1862 for 300,000 men to serve 9 -months. • 9 Scotland residents joined the 26th CVI, Company G [9 – months]

8. The 26th Connecticut Volunteer InfantryCompany G “Scotland’s Company” • The regiment participated in the May 27 & June 14, 1863 assaults on Port Hudson. Both were repulsed. • Joseph Lewis was wounded on June 14th. • Henry Smith died on January 1, 1863. • Elisha Green died July 9, 1863 the day the fort surrendered. National and State Regimental Colors of the 26th Connecticut More Scotland residents served together in Company G, 26th CVI than any other single unit.

10. Scotland’s Recruits : 1863 - 1865 • All CT towns find it hard to recruit by early 1863. • Many begin the practice of enlisting out of town by offering monetary bounties or hiring agents to recruit out of town. • All enlistments from Scotland after 1863 were recruits from out of town.

Scotland’s Runaway’s & DesertersSubstitutes, Draftee’s, and Bounty Jumpers • Michael Vandall – 8th CVI / K – Enlisted September 3, 1863 “shot for desertion” November 3, 1863 • George Flynn – 12th CVI / B – Enlisted March 30, 1864 Deserted April 25, 1864 • Robert Jenkins – 12th CVI / F – Enlisted March 30, 1864 Deserted May 8, 1864 • William Docerity – 12th CVI / E – Enlisted February 30, 1864 Deserted June 26, 1864 • Arthur Nelson – 20th CVI / C – Enlisted August 9, 1864 Deserted October 5, 1864 “en route” • James Longstron – 20th CVI / C – Enlisted August 9, 1864 Deserted October 5, 1864 “en route”

12. The 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry (Colored) • Participated in the Siege of Petersburg • At the Battle of Kell House, VA [Oct. 27 – 28 , 1864] the 29th CVI drove Confederate troops from their defensive works with a loss of 80 men. • William Burton was killed in action.
