Mrs. Murrell amauldin@greenville.k12.sc.us 355-1569 January 13, 2014 News From Room 26 Important Dates 1/16- End of 2nd Quarter 1/17 & 1/20- No School 1/21- Geometry test A Peek At The Week: Math: We’ll discuss & model fractions (halves, thirds, fourths). Students will bring home a study guide over the weekend to prepare for the unit test which will be Tuesday, Nov. 21 (1st day we return to school). Reading: We’ll be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We’ll use non-fiction books to gather and sequence information about his life. Phonics: We’ll focus our studies on words with suffixes (-ed, -ing) in which the last consonant is doubled. We’ll also learn about homographs. Writing: Students will learn about pronouns and how to use them in our writing. We’ll also write a final piece of informational writing which will count as a major language arts grade for the 3rd quarter. Social Studies: We’ll take a break to focus on science this week. Science: We’ll begin our matter unit by introducing solids, liquids, and gases. Parent Notes • Poppin’ Math Facts will begin this week. Those that are new to Bryson- this is an incentive program that promotes the student’s knowledge of basic addition & subtraction facts. Students will take a timed quiz each week, beginning with addition facts. As students receive 100% on the quiz, they will move on to the next level. In 2nd grade, there are 4 quizzes in total. Students who receive 100% on all quizzes will become a “math coach” and will be invited to a special celebration at the end of the year. Lunch Menu Tuesday- yogurt, chicken pot pie, black bean burger, Asian ginger soup & salad Wednesday- yogurt, hamburger, mac & cheese with broccoli, vegetable beef soup & salad Thursday- yogurt, Brunswick stew, grilled cheese sandwich, chicken noodle soup & salad
