United Nations The Aims of the United Nations: • To keep peace throughout the world. • To develop friendly relations between nations. • To work together to help people live better lives, to eliminate poverty, disease and illiteracy in the world, to stop environmental destruction and to encourage respect for each other's rights and freedoms. • To be a centre for helping nations achieve these aims. Created in 1945as an after effect of World War II (“Never Again”) The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people.

The Principles of the United Nations: • All Member States must obey the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. • Countries must try to settle their differences by peaceful means. • Countries must avoid using force or threatening to use force. • The UN may not interfere in the domestic affairs of any country. • Countries should try to assist the United Nations. United Nations • Canada has sent over 120,000 troops as part of UN peacekeeping missions • Canada has been one of the top two providers of emergency and regular food aid to people facing starvation around the world. - The United Nations Headquarters is in New York City and other countries around the world but the land and buildings are international territory.

  5. United Nations V E R U S The General Assembly -The 192 Members of the United Nations meet in the General Assembly, which is the closest thing to a world parliament. Each country, large or small, rich or poor, has a single vote; however, none of the decisions made by the Assembly are binding but they carry the weight of worlds governmental opinion. • The Security Council • -The Security Council is composed of five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States and ten non-permanent members that change every year. All Members of the United Nations agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council.

The UN’s law book- the Universal Declaration of Human Rights • Established in 1948 • UDHR is not law abiding, no country has to follow it • In Canada we enforce the principals of the UDHR in: Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms Legal Rights Ontario Human Rights Code Official Languages Act… Agencies also enforce the UDHR in Canada: Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) UDHR council (UNDRC) Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC)
