What do they do? Civil Engineer (Contracting) • Uses professional expertise to ensure that major building projects are constructed according to specifications agreed with client and/or consulting engineers. • Involves primarily with the implementation of the designs and plans on sites, and management of the labour force and materials, according to time and cost constrains. What do they do? Civil Engineer (Consulting) • Responsible for planning, managing, designing and supervising the construction of a wide range of projects • Provides services and advice to clients on all aspect of civil engineering • May well specialise in certain types of projects such as transportation or water supply
Civil Engineer - Skills & personal qualities required • Work as members of a team and liaise with a number of different people including other engineers, sub-contractors, clients, quality surveyors and local authorities • Need to keep up-to-date with the latest materials, methods and techniques in design and construction • Use computer to calculate dimensions, produce accurate drawings, keep records and help plan the order in which work should be carried out • Need the ability to cope with and solve any problems or difficulties that my arise on-site
