Definition of vital statistics Vital statistics is defined as a collection of statistics on vital events in a lifetime of a person as well as relevant characteristics of the events themselves and of the person and persons concerned. 5/10
Vital events • For vital statistics purpose, the vital events of interest are: • live births, adoptions, legitimations, recognitions; • deaths and foetal deaths; and • marriages, divorces, separations and annulments of marriage. Definitions of vital events • The recommended definitions of each vital event on which data are to be collected for vital statistics purposes are as given in para 57 of the Principles and Recommendations for a Vital Statistics System, Revision 2 • 7/10
