What is a Normal Course Load? • Four years = eight semesters • Typically take four, 4-credit courses each semester • 16 credits during most terms • 17 credits during two terms • Course credits • Most classes are four credits • Some language classes are five • Phys Ed classes are usually one • Community Service = zero • 130 credits needed for graduation

  3. How Much Will I Need to Study to Be Academically Successful? • For every hour in class, at least two hours outside of class • Being a student is a full-time job and your primary purpose here

KEYS TO SUCCESS:Students with GPA of 3.7 or higher • Study over 30 hours/week out of class • Preview material prior to class • Review notes after class • Stay 1-2 chapters ahead in text • Visit professor/instructor/tutor • Study in small groups (3-5) several times per week • Ask questions, ask questions, ask questions!!!

What Are the Basic Classroom Expectations? • Attend every class, arrive on time, don’t leave early • Complete all assignments on time • Participate in class discussion • Come to class prepared (readings, asmts) • Complete writing drafts early to take advantage of support • Take all exams • Adhere to and uphold the Honor Code

What Does My Math Placement Score Mean? • First digit = basic skills (1 or 2) • Second digit = algebra skill (1 - 5) • Need 22 for entry college level math course • Math Workshop is here to help! • Choosing your first math class: • Think about interests, major req’s • Can take below math placement

  9. What is a WittSem? • First Year seminar on an interesting topic • Helps orient you to college life • Required for all new students • Your professor is your advisor

  10. Recommendations for Creating a Course Schedule • Schedule your first math and language courses in your first year • Take ENGL 101 fall or spring of first year • Be careful not to take too many Writing-Intensive courses in one term • Have alternative/back-up options ready
