Liberal Arts Degree Program Goals: The integrated curriculum of the Liberal Arts degree offers students a broad knowledge of the arts, humanities, mathematics, sciences, and social sciences and presents an appreciation of their contribution to society from a historical and contemporary perspective. Students are provided with a well-rounded education that offers the opportunity for depth of knowledge within an area of emphasis. This multidisciplinary approach enables students to develop communication, critical thinking, and intellectual skills that effectively prepare them for lifelong learning and for advanced study in a wide range of majors at the university level.
Seven Areas of Emphasis • Applied Health, Nutrition and Kinesiology • Arts and Humanities • Business and Technology • Creative and Applied Arts • Mathematics and Sciences • Multicultural Studies • Social and Behavioral Sciences
Accreditation Task • Develop program outcomes that are specific to each area of emphasis and connected to MiraCosta’s ILO and GE outcomes • Develop an assessment method that captures program completers
Develop Program Outcomes and Connect Outcomes to an Assessment Method • A Program outcome is a clear and measurable statement that defines what a student can do at the end of a program • Each area of emphasis is comprised of 18 units; the overall Liberal Arts degree is comprised of 60 units • Four broadly defined program outcomes developed for all students completing the Liberal Arts degree that connect to MiraCosta’s ILOs and GE outcomes • Two more narrowly defined outcomes developed for each area of emphasis • No outcome tied to a specific course within the overall degree or area of emphasis

Arts and HumanitiesProgram Outcomes Students will recognize the value and contribution of the arts. The program will emphasize the links between the multiple disciplines within the arts and humanities, and it will develop creative critical thinking skills. Students will develop oral and written skills to effectively communicate the relationship between the individual, society, and the arts.
Creative and Applied Arts Program Outcomes Students will produce or analyze creative and applied works of art. Students will explore art forms and evaluate their influence on contemporary society
Mathematics and Sciences Program Outcomes Students will demonstrate the ability to perform computations and apply critical thinking to solve problems. Students will incorporate new observations and use a variety of experimental and analytical techniques as well as data collection and display methods to construct this understanding.
Social and Behavioral SciencesProgram Outcomes Students will consider ways in which people have reacted in response to human, social, and political institutions. Students will analyze how ideas in social and behavioral science can be applied to explain events that influence the larger society.
