  1. Percussion Ensembles A versatile family…

Where did it come from? • Percussion instruments have been around as long as humanity. • Today’s percussion section includes too many instruments to list. • Turkish military instruments were used in the 1700s-1800s. These included snare drums, triangles, cymbals, and small gongs. Castanets and tambourines came from the Mediterranean.

  3. Where did it come from? • Timpani became popular in King Henry VIII’s time. • By the mid-late 1800s, the triangle, snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals became standard instruments in the orchestra. • Composers interested in music of different cultures would add many new instruments to the family. • The glockenspiel and xylophone appeared in the late 1800s.

  4. Who plays what? • The timpanist is considered a separate member of the section and usually only plays the timpani. • Other parts are assigned by the section leader – mallets, drums, cymbals, and special effects. • Sometimes a player has to play multiple instruments. They may even have to play more than one at once!
