Bougainvillea How do flowers help the plant to reproduce?
1. Flowers produce pollen (needed to fertilise other flowers). • 2. Insects (like bees) and birds are attracted to flowers due to their brightly-coloured petals and scent. • 3. When they collect the nectar from flowers, some of the pollen gets on them. • 4. When they fly to another plant to collect nectar, some pollen is deposited into the new flower.
5. This can result in fertilisation and a fruit developing. • 6. Fruits (which have seeds) are eaten by animals. The seeds (with the droppings) are then spread far and wide, causing new plants to grow. • 7. Flowers with small petals, no nectar and no scent depend on the wind to disperse their pollen.
