  2. Introduction This research paper is to explore firewall, one of Internet security solution infollowing issues: • What is a firewall • The different types of firewalls and how they work • Basic Firewall Design Decisions

  3. What is a firewall? A firewall typically guards an internal network against malicious access from the outside.

  4. 2. The different types of firewalls and how they work Firewalls fall into four broad categories: • packet filters • circuit level gateways • application level gateways • stateful multilayer inspection firewalls

  5. Packet Filtering Firewall

  6. Circuit level gateways

  7. Application level gateways

  8. Stateful multilayer inspection firewalls

  9. 3. Basic Firewall Design Decisions • determine stance of the firewall • determine inbound access and outbound access policy • determine if dial-in or dial-out access is required • decide financial cost of the firewall

  10. Summary The firewall is part of an overall security policy that creates a perimeter defense designed to protect the information resources of the organization. It is therefore necessary for an organization to have a well planned and strictly implemented security program that includes but is not limited to firewall protection.
