Cosmetic Surgery in Teens to Remedy Self Esteem Issues Jessica Linares
My Project I want to inform young adults and children on self esteem, and that outer beauty isn’t an essential part of our life. I will pass out surveys at Dekaney High School, speak to them about this topic, and calculate the results. I will also pass out surveys at Booker Elementary to see if whether or not children are already worrying about appearances at their age.
Survey If you could change any part of yourself, what would it be? Please check all that apply: Face Body Part Personality I wouldn't change anything If one was selected, please explain why. This is an anonymous survey. Any individual information that is acquired and submitted will be kept confidential for your safety.
What is Self Esteem? It is someone’s overall appearance of themselves, whether it be positive or negative. Self-esteem issues can begin as soon as kindergarten and continue until later ages.
How Do Issues Occur? As children, we all have the understanding that children can say some harsh things. What many people don’t seem to understand is that words can truly harm a person, causing them to have a lower their self esteem.
Can Bullying be That Harmful? This emerging trend can ultimately lead to depression in children which can cause a drop in self esteem. The teasing can go as far as having the victim look for alternatives to change themselves externally. These external changes can be done through cosmetic surgery.
Information It seems immoral to see teenagers attempting to “improve” their physical features at such a young age. Teenagers need to understand that surgery isn’t the way to go. Maturing in the patient should be apparent prior surgery, if any at all is completed.
What is Cosmetic Surgery? Cosmetic Surgery is a procedure which alters a certain body part to “improve” its physical appearance. In 2011, there were 1, 579,079 surgical procedures in America (ASPS). According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, it was reported that in 2010, 210,000 American teens underwent surgical procedures.
Why? In today's society, it is clear that many youths today have a broad idea of what is "normal“. Whatever is out of that range is brutally labeled as "awkward" or in other terms, different. It is lamentably reported, that bullying and teasing for these differences causes an enormous impact in teenagers.
Common Procedures Rhinoplasty Otoplasty Gynecomastia Breast Augmentation Liposuction
Rhinoplasty A procedure which includes the reshaping of the nose. These procedures may be executed whenever the patient reaches the age of 13 and the growth of their nose has been reached (90%). This procedure has an average cost of $6,000.
Otoplasty A procedure which includes the reshaping of the ears. This procedure can be executed as soon as the cartilage in the ears has matured and fully developed, which is usually around the age of 5. This procedure usually costs about $5,000.
Gynecomastia A procedure including the reduction of chest enlargement in males. Gynecomastia happens in about 1 in every 3 males (33% of teenage boys go through this). The average cost of these procedures is about $6,500.
Breast Augmentation A procedure which uses implants to enlarge or restore breasts. Breast augmentation was performed on about 4,153 teenagers who were 18 years old or younger in 2010. This procedure is about $5,500 and needs to repeated about every 10 years. In the long run, the silicone placed in the breast platelets can produce cancer.
Lipoplasty Or also know as liposuction, is a procedure which reshapes the body’s figure to what is desired. The procedure can be valued from the price of $5,000 and $15,000. According to Dr. Hodgkinson, 10% of his patients who wanted lipoplasty were teenagers.
More Information Make sure the surgeon is licensed, certified, and is trusted by a known relative or friend. Before undergoing a procedure, make sure to meet with your surgeon and see that procedures are done in an accredited facility.
Risks and Consequences Infection Unwanted Scars Nerve Damage Asymmetry of a certain body part Death
Risks Before and After Surgery • There are certain medications that should be discontinued prior and after the surgery. • These include the following: • Aspirins and Ibuprofens (NSAID’s) • CAN LEAD TO DEATH OF THE SKIN • Narcotics, Anti-depressants and Alcohol • LESS BREATHING AND BLEEDING AFTER SURGERY • Vitamins and Herbal Medications • BLEEDING AFTER SURGERY *If considering a procedure, consult with the surgeon about all the medications the patient is taking to decrease risks. Medications should be discontinued about 10-14 days before the actual procedure.*
My Theory… If we start educating children at a young age that different is okay, there will be less bullying. Although schools are typically a “No Bully Zone”, we should truly reinforce this. The media can be harmful in the sense that children might want to look a specific way to “fit in”.
More Information Instead of having parents who agree with their children changing their appearance while still being adolescents, they should love their children as they are. It is important for children to have that feeling of fitting in, whether it be from their family or friends.
