Who were the Pilgrims???? Separatists who wanted to officially split from the Church of England.
The Pilgrims were treated cruelly by the English government. • Fined • Jailed • Executed They decided to leave England, and they went to the Netherlands.
But the Pilgrims did not remain there, because they missed the English way of life.
Upon returning to England, they were given a charter to set up a colony in Virginia. They set sail on a boat called the Mayflower, 100 men and women set sail in September 1620.
They traveled for 2 months under stormy conditions. Pilgrims landed north of Virginia, but decided to stay there instead of going on to Virginia.

Plymouth Settlement With Myles Standish, the Captain, leading them, the Pilgrims went ashore and set up a small, make-shift village. The first winter was harsh for the Pilgrims. Of the 102 that originally set sail, only 52 made it through the winter. They decided to stay at Plymouth because they believed it was “God’s will” that they remain there.
Native Americans The following Spring, the Pilgrims met the neighboring Native American tribe, known as the Wampanoag. These Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to live off the land, and how to plant crops, such as corn, beans, and pumpkins. The Native American that helped them the most was named Squanto.
The following Fall, the Pilgrims harvested their crops. They were so thankful for the food, that they set a day aside for celebration. What did they call this day????? THANKSGIVING!!
They were grateful to the Wampanoag for helping them, so they prepared a feast and invited the Indians.
