  4. ENTRY INTO SHOWRING • Establish eye contact • Enter in nice slow pace • Cattle are always led in a circle away from the showman • Stay in line • Allow space on the move and setting up • Follow ring steward’s instructions NEXT

  5. SPEED • Patience, speed or lack of can destroy showmanship chances • Nice deliberate pace • Use the show stick in front the head to slow a calf that is too fast. • Stay in line • Allow space NEXT

  6. CONTROL • Completely halter broken • Animal must respond quickly to the halter and the show stick • Be quick but calm in setting the end closest to judge first • Be smooth in transition from show stick to halter • Maintain a cool temperament regardless of the problem NEXT

  7. SPACING • Allow adequate space from outside walls and other cattle. • Judge should have room to circle your calf. • Anticipate on the move to allow for enough space NEXT

SETTING • Steers should be set squarely on all 4 corners of the calf. • Heifers will be allowed to set the rear leg next to Judge slightly back • Allow the stop to set the front feet. • Use show stick around heel to move rear foot forward and between toes to move backward. • Resetting may spell trouble in the Judge’s eyes. Set them and leave them! NEXT

PULLING TO RESET • From a side by side setup • Lead the calf forward, clearing other cattle, turn to the right or away from yourself. • Go back through the hole you established and again turn away from yourself • Pull back in same hole, stay in line • Allow front to set itself using show stick to set rear feet NEXT
