Ny-Ålesund, Kongsvegen Stick 6, Bergen Project; Hammre Børge, Gallet J.C. Conditions: Mixed conditions on site when measuring. Stratigraphy on glacier on 25 April 2013 GPS : N = 78˚46’40.5 E = 13˚09’23.1 Altitude = 546meters a.s.l. Observations 3 sets of measurements with the FS, 3 looking up, 3 looking down, 3 looking up, clouds in front of sun, 14:30; 14:37 and 14:41 local time Surface layer : is constituted of stellar crystals, drysnow. Density is 137 kg.m-3, would estimate the optical radius between 50 and 100 µm. Second layer: 67 to 64cm: small rounded grain of 0.2 mm, density is 270 kg.m-3 Third layer:64to 49 cm. No very distinct limit was found but there is a transition in that layer with almost 5 cm of rounded particles on top, 0.1 mm size. Then the rest is more mixed form on top and clear facetted crystals on bottom. Both types are 0.1 to 0.2 mm size. The density of the entire layer is 380 kg.m-3. Fourth layer: 49 to 20 cm. Same as above, transition from facetted crystals on top, 10 cm of 0.2 to 0.3 mm size and depth hoar on bottom. The depth hoar is around 0.5 mm size and the density of the entire layer is 332 kg.m-3 The snowpack described here is colder than the one down to stick 3 and this is visible on the size of the grain, much smaller and on the fact that the distinction between layer is not very easy to determine. The metamorphism is a bit slower. 70 67 64 49 Tair@ + 150 cm : - 2.5°C T snow from top in degree C, see depth on stratigraphy for layers: 5 cm = -3.5°C10 cm = -4.5°C 15 cm = -5.2°C 20 cm = -6.4°C 30 cm = -7.2°C30 cm = -8.4°C 20 0 Glacier, ice, depth is ?
