  3. Finch Campus Snapshot • Finch Elementary is a Title I campus. Approximately 90% of the students are identified as low socio-economic and 87% of the students receive ESL or bilingual services. • Finch has an enrollment of 545 students.

  4. Goal of iPod Initiative • In 2007-2008 the 5th grade students at Finch Elementary were chosen by MISD to pilot a video iPod initiative for the district. The goal of the iPod initiative was to see how the use of the video iPod could enhance instruction and impact student achievement. • The area of concern was in Science, with an emphasis on improvement in scores of the bilingual and ESL students. • We are now in the second yearof the project.

  5. Home Access Student Survey • The first week of school we passed out a survey to the students to ask the students about home access to a computer and to internet resources. • Over 50% of the students in 5th grade did not have access to a computer in their home. • The number of students that did not have internet access at home increased to 75%.

  6. Year 1Timeline for Implementation of the iPods • The teachers began the first nine weeks by modeling lessons integrated into their plans using the video iPods. • The students learned how to care for and use the iPods properly and learned how to download podcasts in weekly small group lessons.

  7. By the end of the 1st nine weeks and throughout the 2nd nine weeks the teachers began to use iPods as learning centers in Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts. The lessons on the iPods correlated with the lessons taught in class.

  8. The teachers learned how to download and convert United Streaming videos that reinforced concepts related to the TEKS in the area of Science, Math and Social Studies. • The Language Arts teachers used current events podcasts from CNN Student News and author videos from Reading Rockets. • The Language Arts teachers also correlated reading passages they used for direct instruction with video clips. This helped give our ESL and Bilingual students background knowledge of the topic.

  9. In Science the teachers converted teacher created PowerPoint presentations that taught important concepts and imported them into the photos portion of the video iPod. Students reviewed the concepts that were introduced in class by viewing them on their iPod. • The Science teachers also used podcasts from Wild Chronicles and Experiment of the Week by Robert Krampf.

  10. During the 2nd nine weeks a meeting was held to explain the iPod initiative to the parents. Parents signed a permission slip that accepts responsibility for their child using the iPod for home instruction.

  11. During the 3rd and 4th nine weeks the iPods were used daily for centers in Science, Language Arts, small group science and student home use.

  12. Year 2Timeline for Implementation of the iPods • We had 3 days of summer training. This training allowed us to download additional videos correlated to the curriculum. • Reorganized the video library. • Teachers felt more comfortable using iPods at learning stations after the first few weeks of school. • Held training for equal implementation of use of ipods in English and Bilingual classes/test scores.

  13. We had a donor purchase 26 video iPods for our 4th grade students to be used in the classrooms at learning stations. The emphasis in 4th grade was in the area of writing and science. We utilized the Belkin microphone for one-to-one conferencing.

  25. Sample of a Science LessonReviewing Learned or Inherited Behavior • TEKS: 5.10AB The student knows that likenesses between offspring and parents can be inherited or learned. The student is expected to (a) identify traits that are inherited from parent of offspring in plants and animals; and (b) give examples of learned characteristics that result from the influence of the environment.

  26. Student Learning ExpectationDay 1-Introduce vocabulary, engage activity; Day 2-Read The National Geographic article on Penguins. Identify learned and inherited behaviors.Day 3-iPod lesson-see below • SLE: Students will apply what they know about learned behaviors and instincts (inherited behaviors). Students will watch two videos: Emperor Penguins, from National Geographic Shorts and Trainpenguin from Animal Planet and complete a response activity from the list that follows.

  27. Create a T-Chart • Use a blank piece of paper from your folder. Create a T-chart with one side titled “Learned Behaviors” and the other side “Inherited Behaviors/Instincts”. As you are watching each of the 2 videos segments below, list behaviors that you observe in the correct column. • Take your iPod and go to Videos—Videopodcasts—Wild Chronicles, Digital Shorts—Emperor Penguins (7 minutes) • After you have watched this. Go to Video—Videoplaylist—other-Trainpenguin. (2 minutes)

  28. Application of What I Learned Optional student responses: 1) Student will create a t-table with one side titled Inherited Behavior/Instinct and the other side titled Learned Behavior. Students will identify and record examples of each type of behavior as they watch each of the videos. 2) Student will create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the information they learned about penguins learned and instinct/inherited behavior. 3) Student will choose one video and create a reflection about it (use your reflection rubric as a guide).

  29. Sample of a Reading LessonCaldecott Book Study TEKS: 5.11A Offer observations, make connections, react, speculate, interpret, and raise questions in response to text. 5.12C Identify the purposes of different types of texts such as to inform, influence, express, or entertain.

  30. Student Learning ExpectationDay 1-Teacher reads parts of the book The Man Who Walked Between The Towers. Students will identify new vocabulary, purpose of the text, authors style, etc.Day 2-iPod lesson-see below • Student will watch the video of the book being read of The Man Who Walked Between The Towers from the video podcast. Student will then watch the Twin Towers Newscast from YouTube. • Videos-videoplaylists-language arts-authors and stories-man who walked towers/twin towersnewscast

  31. Application of What I Learned • Student will write a reflection about what they learned from reading this book and watching the Twin Towers Newscast. • Student will participate in small group discussions sharing what they wrote and additional thoughts and feeling about the book, newscast, and other connections they had.
