5. Club NGT setup Runs on the 12VDC system
Antenna is a broadband terminated folded dipole, hence an antenna tuner is not required
You are unlikely to work DX on this antenna!!!!
The radio is turned on 24/7, scanning HFN and WICEN HF (region 3)
HF Express and STANANG stack is installed on the adjacent PC
6. Land Mobile versus Amateur It is illegal to use non-type approved equipment on land mobile frequencies
HOWEVER, you can use a land mobile transceiver on Amateur allocations
A type approved transceiver must not be programmable through the front panel, that is, it must be channelised, and only be programmed by a dealer
Examples of land mobile network frequencies are RFDS, VKS737, VMS469, HF Oz, EMQ/SES and the 2 x 5Mhz Emcomm frequencies allocated to the WIA
Many other users, e.g., military, aid agencies, police, ambulance, emergency services and long haul aircraft use HF land mobile on a daily basis
7. Amateur frequencies The NGT has the amateur option, pressing the 4 button will run a macro to put the set into Free Tune TX
Note, you will only be able to FreeTune TX within the Amateur allocations
Use keypad to shift digits, and channel up/down to change the number
AM, LSB and USB modes are available at 100W
For F-calls, you can turn the power down to 10W
8. Land Mobile allocations VKS737 Australian 4WD Network
VMS469 Reids Radiodata Bush Telegraph
HF Oz Travellers Network
None of these networks maintain a voice listening watch, requiring a selcall to call an operator
N.B. The club does not have authority to transmit on any of these networks, hence to be used ONLY in an emergency
9. Other allocations CB 27MHz chook band
Marine now requires DSC, not supported by this NGT
RFDS Royal Flying Doctor Service
Again, these allocations are not monitored for voice calls, a two-tone alarm is required (Emergency Button) is required to get some bodies attention
N.B. The club does not have authority to transmit on any of these allocations, hence to be used ONLY in an emergency
10. EMQ/SES Four networks utilising ALE/CALM for sounding every 4-5 hours.
EMQ statewide
SES South
SES Central
SES West
N.B the channels on this network must only be used by members of the SES SCG, the callsign is VKQ609 followed by your identifier, e.g., my identifier is SC1
11. Networks Networks are used by the NGT to manage different calling systems. That is for VKS737 and WICEN HF -> open selcall (4019), for HFLink, ALE (VK4RC), for EMQ -> CALM (401909),
Networks configured are
WICEN HF (3600, 5355, 5102, 7075, 10115, 14125, 18150, 21190, 24950, 28450)
Global ALE HFN (3596, 7102, 10145.5, 14109, 18206, 21096, 24926, 28146)
EMQ/SES
Land Mobile (VKS737, VMS469, RFDS)
27 MHz CB
12. Selcall versus ALE (CALM) Selective calling
Radio to radio
Beacon or test calls
SMS
GPS position dispatch and requesting
Two versions in use, Codan (4 or 6 digit) and Open (4 digit only)
ALE Automatic Link Establishment
Codan have extended the MIL-STD-0188-0143 functionality and termed it CALM (Codan Automated Link Management)
Same functionality as selcall, but no test/beacon call available
Able to query radios for status, diagnostics, GPS which is not supported by MIL-STD-0188-0143
However, a CALM radio can participate in a MIL-STD-0188-0143 scheme (e.g. HFLink)
13. ALE?, no it is not a beer Designed to take the technical know how of HF propagation out of operating HF
Each transceiver in the network will periodically sound on each frequency, any transceiver scanning those frequencies will log the time, BER and SN into its memory
So when an operator wishes to call another station, they enter the ID of the target and press call, the radio determines the optimum channel according to the time of day and attempts the call. It will keep trying on that channel twice, if no success it will begin to try other channels
For this to work, the radios must be turned on, and setup to scan/sound 24/7.
14. Global ALE HF Network ALE is not confined to land mobile users
A global network has been setup using Amateur radios and soundcard interfaces
Two pilot stations are available in VK, VK5ABN, anybody want to guess who else?
HFLink provides email services and SMS services globally
http://hflink.net
15. STANAG 5066 modem A high performance HF modem has also been acquired
These modems are used by QPS and EMQ for secure file transfer and secure text chatting
Without requiring the Internet, we are able to exchange files with QPS and EMQ securely with strong encryption
The applications are many and varied, e.g. weather maps, site photos, SES RFAs, message forms
16. HF Express The PC adjacent to the NGT has the Stack control and HF Express software installed
A unique address has been allocated to the stack, much like an IP address (0.0.0.5)
To transfer files, simply drag and drop, to and from the remote PC
