Student Feedback Session • Wencil McClenahan • Joseph Perea • Chris Peterson • Wayne Vinson
Student Feedback Session 2011 • Environment • Four MAEA members spoke casually with 30 MAEA students at Nopalito‘s • General Comments and Concerns • Students feel they are getting a quality education and that the department is supportive of them at the department level. • Communication of important items could be better • Some Professors appear to be disengaged from the students and seem uncaring. Students see themselves as customers • Students feel that the demographics of the Professors are headed in the right direction (younger). They think younger Professors are more approachable and willing to talk. • The Aero group seems to be getting so large that it may threaten the quality and resources available to the ME group. • Students have heard there is a financial squeeze on the Department, and are concerned for the quality of their education. • Students would like more industry speakers for seminars that would talk about Engineering in industry and present relevant educational topics.
Student Feedback Session 2011 • Positive Feedback • General acclaim for Crystal Lay. Students feel she is a resource for them in their daily struggle. They feel she reaches out to them with information that they can use. Students in Aero really like her advising style and cited it as a best practice. • Also very positive comments on Dr. Burton. They feel that he is on their side and very supportive of them. Several cited his DIFFEQ Boot Camp as a key enabler for their ongoing success. • Students really like the steam Club. Only one bad comment on a tutor, and a lot of positive comments. Aero students would like something similar for upper division classes. • Students are happy with the CO-OP and Intern process. All seem to understand how to acquire CO-Ops and Internships.
Student Feedback Session 2011 • Room for Improvement • Would like more hands on or practical experience to support classroom learning • Clubs are a good source of learning and practical experience. Would like to see more support of clubs by Professors mentioning them as a way to get hands on experience. Also might be useful to have clubs present outcomes of activities in relevant classes or in seminars or other venues. • Students were either unaware of the benefits of the FE Exam and PE license, or did not think it was important. Some said that Professors did not promote the FE exam until their Senior year, and they felt that was too late. • Books are too expensive. Many are over $200 each. Worse, one student complained that the Physics Department had them buy a $300 book, and the professor did not teach from it.
